Dancing Thru Pregnancy® programs Total Pregnancy Fitness™ and Mom-Baby Fitness™ are ongoing programs of pregnancy and postpartum fitness. Founded in 1979 by Yale University movement specialist Ann Cowlin, MA, CSM, CCE, Dancing Thru Pregnancy (DTP) has trained many thousands of fitness instructors throughout the world. Over a million women have participated in classes under the auspices of these instructors. Research studies indicate that DTP participants are at reduced risk for some disorders of pregnancy and medical interventions in labor.
Cowlin is the author of Women’s Fitness Program Development (Human Kinetics Pub.) and “Women and Exercise” in the nursing textbook, Varney’s Midwifery. She is also the expert consultant for the U.S. Army’s Pregnancy and Postpartum Train the Trainer Program. She presents lectures, workshops and research findings on pregnancy and postpartum fitness, as well as other health fitness issues in women’s health, throughout the U.S. and in Europe and Africa. She is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS).
Research associate Robyn Brancato Ozovek, CNM, MS, MA, a certified nurse midwife in New York City, works with Cowlin on program development. She is the author of a meta-analysis on passive descent during labor in JOGNN (Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing) and has joined Cowlin as co-author of the next edition of “Women and Exercise” in Varney’s Midwifery.
The two are also founding members of the Women’s Health Fitness Institute, a non-profit organization doing research and public health outreach to improve women’s health through active living.
The DTP Blog is intended to bring evidence-based information to pregnant women, health fitness instructors and those considering pregnancy about actions that often provide benefits in pregnancy, birth and beyond. Individuals or institutions interested in the instructor training seminars will find more information at our website, included on our Blogroll (www.dancingthrupregnancy.com).
